301 / 1.4310 / UNS S30100

The type 301 stainless steel (UNS S30100) is an austenitic type of steel, and it has 17% normal composition chromium along with 7% of nickel. It means that this steel will provide good ductility and strength when you work it.

Besides that, this type of steel is excellent when it comes to corrosion and rust resistance. It is the best type of steel for drawing, forming, and welding.

Furthermore, it is available in different temping conditions, and it is used in various applications in its full, half, and semi-half conditions.

It also has excellent temperature resistivity and has a higher melting range. If you cold-work it, the steel will become magnetic, but in the annealed form, it is non-magnetic.

Common Names: Type 301  Stainless Steel is also known as DIN 1.4310 or DIN X12CrNi-17-7.

Executive Standards:

  • UNS S30100, AMS 5901, ASTM A 240, ASTM A 666, ASME SA 240, ASME SA 666
  • EN 1.4310, PWA-LCS, S1000 / S-SPEC-1, GE Aviation S-SPEC-35 AeDMS S-400, RR SABRe Edition 2, DFARS

Chemical composition of 1.4310:

The 301 stainless steel is made of 0.15% carbon with 2% manganese and 0.045% of phosphorus.

Silicon and sulfur are in this chemical mix as well, with 1% and 0.03% portions, respectively.

There is 16% to 18% of the chromium in the mix and 6% to 8% of nickel in there as well.

Add another 0.1% of nitrogen, and you have 301 stainless steel at your disposal.

Mechanical Properties:

The 301 stainless steel is commonly used in cold-rolled and annealed conditions. When it is in its work-hardened form, the steel developed better tensile strengths as compared to other austenitic types that are more stable.

The minimum mechanical properties (room temperature) for strip, sheet, or plate as per A666 and ASTM A240 standards are,

Applications of 1.4310 :

  • Trailer bodies.
  • Convertor parts.
  • Tableware and utensils.
  • Wheel covers and auto body rim.
  • Door frames and roof drainage.
  • Structural parts and components of aircraft.

Frequently Asked Questions about DIN 1.4310:

  • Does Type 301 stainless steel rust?

It has a low level of chromium and thus is more susceptible to corrosion as well as oxidation over time. However, with nickel, it maintains its strength.

  •  Can 301 steel be hardened with heat?

No, it can’t be hardened that way. You have to anneal it and get rid of any hardening you have after cold working.

  • Is 301 stainless steel magnetic?

As it is austenitic steel with chromium; therefore, it is not magnetic, but when you cold worked it, it becomes magnetic.
