The Type 317L stainless steel has higher quantities of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium but is low in carbon. Hence, it has better corrosion resistance and can also survive chemical attacks from tartaric, formic, citric, acetic, and sulfurous acids.

It has a higher creep and also has higher stress rupture. This alloy also has higher tensile strengths at high temperatures. The alloy tends to develop some magnetic properties after welding, but none when in annealed form.

Possible Alternative Grades:

  • Type 317 offers better heat resistance when annealed.

  • Does the 317L alloy exhibit any magnetic properties?

It does show magnetic properties when annealed. (1.02 max at 200 H)

  • Can the 317L alloy be welded with the oxyacetylene method?

Now it should be welded with any welding method involving fusion resistance but not the oxyacetylene technique.

  • Is this alloy corrosion-resistant?

Yes, it is highly resistant to corrosion, and it is resistant to acids and iodides as well.
