Monel Alloy 400
- Seawater resistance & high steam temperatures
- Excellent stress-corrosion resistance
- Resistant to hydrofluoric or hydrochloric acids when de-aerated
- Mild resistance to sulfuric and hydrochloric acids
- Near-perfect resistance to alkaline and neutral salt
Description
Overview:
Monel 400 comprises of 67% Nickel and 23% Copper. This alloy flaunts features such as seawater resistance and steams at a high temperature. It is also resistant to caustic and salt solutions. This solid solution required cold working to be hardened.
This Monel metal alloy of copper-nickel also exhibits properties such as high corrosion resistance, high strength, and amazing weldability. When exposed to brackish/seawater combination, this alloy showcases excellent stress-corrosion resistance. It has led to its widescale use in marine applications.
Due to the high amount of copper, this metal Monel alloy is rapidly affected by ammonia and nitric acid systems.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Is the Alloy 400 similar to Monel 405?
The Monel 405 comes as a free-machine grade for Alloy 400. The percentage of carbon, nickel, iron, manganese, silicon, and copper composition in Monel 405 is the same as the Alloy 400. However, the sulfur content shifts from a low 0.024 to anywhere between 0.025-0.060%.
- What is the Monel alloy used for?
The Monel-Nickel alloy 400 is used in applications such as chemical processing, marine engineering, as well as hydrocarbon processing. Besides, it can also be used in pumps, shafts, valves, etc.
- Does the Monel 400 show magnetic properties?
The nickel-copper Monel 400 alloy, when kept at room temperature, is a tad-bit magnetic. It is widely used in oil, chemical, and marine industries. On the other hand, Monel K-500 is non-magnetic.
